How urban parks help communities

How urban parks help communities

Story 24/04/2020

World Parks Week is a chance to really celebrate our parks and green spaces – albeit a little differently this year! We spoke to Mark Camley, Executive Director of Park Operations and Venues, about why urban parks in particular are so important for communities.

“While London might be one of the largest cities in the world, it’s also home to incredible parks – of which we’re proud to be one.

Parks play a crucial role for the communities surrounding them. As well as offering a source of fresh air and access to nature – particularly important within urban environments – they give people a space for exercise, leisure and relaxation, bringing different groups within a community together.

All these aspects bring about further positive changes on the local area. Clean air helps tackle climate change and air pollution, which, along with exercise, has significant health benefits. Access to green spaces has a proven impact on mental well-being too, particularly important for older or more isolated members of a community.

Many of those living in east London don’t have access to a garden, balcony or outside space, and will be relying on their local parks as a lifeline throughout lockdown. With 560 acres of parklands, paths and waterways, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park offers plenty of space for those nearby of all ages to get outside in the fresh air for daily exercise. The colourful meadows and flowerbeds, along with rows of blossoming trees, also provide a welcome reminder that spring has arrived.

The Park is well known around the world for its iconic landmarks and varied and prestigious events programme. However, with venues, attractions and cafes around the Park closed for the time being, and the UK weeks into its nationwide lockdown, it’s the role Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park plays within the local community that matters now more than ever.

This is why it’s so important for park users to follow social distancing guidelines – to keep them open and safe for everyone to enjoy the benefits of their local park.”
