STADIUM TO REOPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE LONDON 2012 FOR ‘THE NATIONAL LOTTERY ANNIVERSARY RUN’

STADIUM TO REOPEN TO THE PUBLIC FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE LONDON 2012 FOR ‘THE NATIONAL LOTTERY ANNIVERSARY RUN’

Press Release 24/04/2013

The first sporting event in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Stadium since the London 2012 Paralympic Games Closing Ceremony will be ‘The National Lottery Anniversary Run’, it has been announced today.

The National Lottery Anniversary Run

The five-mile mass participation run is being held in association with the London Borough of Newham, The National Lottery and the London Legacy Development Corporation and will be staged by Nova International on Sunday 21st July 2013.

The event will give up to 10,000 members of the public the chance to follow in the footsteps of their sporting idols, running the final 300m to the Stadium finish line on the same track that Usain Bolt, Jessica Ennis, Jonnie Peacock and Mo Farah raced to win Gold.

Places in ‘The National Lottery Anniversary Run’ will be on sale from 9:00am on Thursday 25 April 2013 and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Newham residents can enter a ballot for 750 free exclusive places. For further information on how to apply for tickets, log on to www.nationallotteryrun.com

Building on last year’s successful ‘National Lottery Olympic Park Run’, which was the first public event inside the Stadium, the five-mile route will take in iconic venues across Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Up to 10,000 places will be available to runners at ticket launch, each with the chance to bring two friends or family members to sit in the Stadium and cheer them on to their own moment of glory.

If the thought of running five miles is a daunting one, there will also be a shorter family fun run that children can participate in (accompanied by an adult) with more than 2,000 places available.

Nova International is the leader in mass participation sport and has created the event with the London Borough of Newham, The National Lottery and the London Legacy Development Corporation.

Chairman and founder of Nova International Brendan Foster said:

“‘The National Lottery Anniversary Run’ will be one of the great sporting events for the public to be part of this year. To run in Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and finish in the Stadium – following in the footsteps of legends such as Usain Bolt and Mo Farah – is a unique opportunity. I hope it will inspire a range of new people to participate in physical activity.”

Mo Farah, Great Britain’s double-Olympic gold winning athlete at 5000m and 10,000m, attended the launch today and said:

“The National Lottery Anniversary Run will be a magnificent occasion. It is fitting that the first people to run on the track since the end of London 2012 will be members of the British public, who did so much to make the Olympic and Paralympic Games such a success.

“Running down the home straight to win Gold for Britain last summer was one of the greatest experiences of my life and it is wonderful that people will experience the chance to run on the track as part of The National Lottery Anniversary Run”.

Sir Robin Wales, Mayor of the London Borough of Newham, said:

”The ‘National Lottery Anniversary Run’ will give our residents exclusive access to an amazing sporting opportunity and the chance to compete on the same record-breaking track as the heroes of the London 2012 Games.

“With 750 free places for Newham residents and 1,500 guests, this is the first community benefit from our part ownership of the Olympic Stadium.

“We have worked tirelessly to secure a lasting legacy from the London 2012 Games for our residents. This has included delivering a range of community benefits and fulfilling the key promises of the 2012 Games to inspire a generation and encourage more people to take up sport.”

Andy Duncan, Managing Director of National Lottery operator Camelot said:

“No-one contributed more to Great Britain’s glorious summer of sporting success last year than National Lottery players – indeed, nine out of 10 of our medallists benefited from lottery support.

“The National Lottery Anniversary Run celebrates this, and the life-changing support our players continue to give to both grassroots and elite sport as part of the £30 million-plus they raise for Good Causes throughout the UK each and every week. It is also a fitting reminder of the significant contribution that lottery players made to making the Olympic Park become a reality.”

Dennis Hone, Chief Executive, London Legacy Development Corporation said:

“Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park begins to open from July 2013 and it will primarily be a public park open for people to come and explore and enjoy. This summer we are hosting a series of events to mark the anniversary of the Games and the Park beginning to open. We are delighted that The National Lottery Anniversary Run is one such event, welcoming people in to the Park to enjoy the fantastic new facilities before the Park fully opens in spring 2014.”

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park will open in phases – starting with the north park in July – and will be fully open by spring 2014. It will be a new piece of the city providing jobs, homes and schools alongside the state of the art venues. The London Legacy Development Corporation is responsible for the Park’s transformation and is on track to deliver a great destination and lasting legacy for east London.
