The Great North: film screening

01/05/2026

Visit UCL East Cinema at One Pool Street for a special screening of THE GREAT NORTH, part of The Music is Black Festival from East Bank at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Intertwining Black history and modern-day architecture in a meditative film about Manchester, THE GREAT NORTH moves through the Black communities and spaces to tell the story of Manchester.

Black Mancunian Memory

Taking Manchester’s industrial history as a starting point, THE GREAT NORTH is the story of Manchester told through its Black, Asian and Irish communities, spanning outwards to the North of England and the rest of the world. Directed by Jenn Nkiru, the film includes new footage and archival material and is set to a soundtrack of the city's underground music scene.

The screening will be followed by a conversation between director Jenn Nkiru and Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka.
