Arsenal x Adidas x Black Music: panel talk
04/06/2026
Listen in to an expert panel discussion exploring the organic connection to Arsenal Football Club that has been forged by Black communities in London, Britain and beyond from the 1970’s to the present day. Part of The Music is Black Festival from East Bank at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, this panel will analyse the powerful convergences between Black British music culture, Black British Identity, sport and fashion.
Arsenal in Black Britain
The concept of Black Arsenal was developed by the author Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka's experiences at the Notting Hill Carnival, which brings together Black music forms and the presence of Arsenal football shirts as worn by Black people to the carnival from the early 1990s onwards.
Beyond just sport, the relationship between Arsenal and the Black communities of London can be seen across photography, art, geography, music, fashion and Black popular culture.
Panellist's will include Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka, author of Black Arsenal: Club, Culture, Identity; Femi Koleoso, the bandleader for jazz quintet Ezra Collective; Foday Dumbuya, who designed the Arsenal’s 24/25 away kit; and Anita Asante, a former England international footballer with 71 caps and leading football pundit. The talk will be chaired by Jeanette Kwakye MBE, a British broadcaster and former Olympic sprinter, best known as a leading sports presenter for the BBC, Sky Sports, and Channel 5.
