Join UCL East for an evening of celebration for the launch of Trēow of Grime a new audiovisual work by Jazmin Morris, part of The Music is Black Festival.
Trēow of Grime brings local history and culture of ‘the underground’ to the centre of UCL’s new campus, disrupting the formalities of the institution and gentrification. This powerful and subversive work explores themes of fantasy gaming and the heritage of pirate radio, addressing the harsh disparities of racialised surveillance, institutionalisation and poverty across the UK. Morris places found footage of her late stepfather, Esmond Bristol in digital environments, highlighting the discrepancies within the lower classes of the UK and their access (or lack thereof) to the same rights as those of the middle and upper classes, including mental health support, and access to green spaces.
This work highlights some of the most powerful words captured from Esmond and Grime MC Crazy Titch and places ‘digital’ nature in juxtaposition with the concrete estate, subtly questioning systems of oppression and who is afforded freedom and liberty.
