This year’s free East Summer School is now open for registration for young people aged 12–17, who live in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets or Waltham Forest.

The face-to-face sessions range from one-off one-day workshops to week-long courses covering subjects such as arts, music and fashion, engineering medical solutions, making films and radio content, skateboarding, hip hop dance and so much more.

A full list of sessions and the timetable is available HERE.

The workshops are designed for people with an interest in creative, tech and design industries. They are supported by the world-leading East Bank partners BBC, UAL’s London College of Fashion, University College London, V&A and Sadler’s Wells. The programme is also supported by Foundation for Future London, City of London, Culture Mile Learning, Mace, LMA, Staffordshire University, Bloom, and is being managed by London Legacy Development Corporation.

This year’s summer school will be the largest since it began in 2018 and will be taking place in-person at venues around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. Young people living in Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest will be given priority for the courses. Last year’s summer school was held online due to Covid-19 restrictions and attracted more than 250 participants.

Layla Conway, Senior Communities Manager, London Legacy Development Corporation, said: “We can’t wait to welcome young people to this year’s East Summer School which is back with in-person workshops this summer with our biggest programme to date! We know young people have had a tough time over the last year and missed out on lots of experiences so this is a way of getting them interested and involved in these the creative, tech and design industries over the summer.”

Young people can register at www.queenelizabetholympicpark.co.uk/summerschool with registration closing on 14 July 2021.

Kelci Shields, 12, from Newham, said: “As a result of Summer School I became more confident with saying how I feel and expressing my opinion, I learnt that no one is going to judge you on what you have to say. I want to inspire other young people to have their voices heard.”

About East Bank

East Bank is a new £1.1 billion powerhouse of culture, education, innovation and growth being built on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford, east London. East Bank will be spread across three sites – UCL East (UCL’s new campus), Stratford Waterfront (Sadler’s Wells, BBC, the V&A and UAL’s London College of Fashion) and Here East (the V&A's new Collection and Research Centre, and an existing space for UCL).

The scheme, driven with significant backing and funding from the Mayor of London and support from HM Government, will provide skills and jobs for local people, bring over 10,000 students to the site, and attract thousands of visitors from London and beyond. East Bank will help to cement the capital’s reputation as a world leader in culture, education and innovation creating 2,500 jobs, £1.5 billion of economic benefit and 600 new homes.

East Bank will build on the area’s existing creative credentials, and East Bank partners have been building relationships and delivering projects with the thriving arts, fashion and community organisations based in the area, including the artistic community in Hackney Wick, East London Dance, Theatre Royal Stratford East, Studio Wayne McGregor and many more.
