The role parks play as lockdown eases

Story 13/05/2021

In the first few months of lockdown last year, the enthusiasts among us used the time to develop new skills; proudly showing off home-baked bread, hitting the home workouts or learning a new language. A lot of that had changed by the time of the government’s most recent lockdown announcement this January. Unsurprisingly, people grew tired about how to use their time to be more efficient and were unmotivated by news of another false start to the year.

What did not change, however, is how important it has been for people to get out of their homes – especially to visit local parks and green spaces. LLDC commissioned a survey in April last year which found that 73% of the local community thought that the Park had benefitted their mental and physical health. Just last month, we revisited the survey and parks are equally popular; in fact, the appeal of parks is not set to diminish even when restrictions ease.

Our latest research found that 60% of respondents are still visiting parks at least a couple of times a week, using the space for exercise or, more recently, to meet with friends or family in small groups.

The way people expect to use parks in the near future has changed, however. As we look to this summer, outdoor spaces like parks will be important for the 46% of respondents who said they are more likely to enjoy a staycation rather than travel abroad this year. That means more people will be topping up their tans in England’s parks rather than on Mediterranean beaches, and they will seek more outdoor attractions, bars and restaurants to socialise, eat and drink with loved ones. While people are more reluctant to attend indoor events and busy spaces, parks provide the peace of mind they need to enjoy time spent with others.

Fortunately for those living on and around the Park, there is an array of alfresco food and drink options – whether that is for a coffee or lunch at Here East’s Canalside or street food and cocktails at the newly opened Hackney Bridge courtyard – there are great offerings across the Park.

As restrictions ease over coming months, we look forward to welcoming more people making the most of the Park as we once again become an international destination.
