SEEDED: London College of Fashion, UAL

London College of Fashion (LCF) is one of six unique colleges that comprise University of the Arts London, offering over 60 undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, and 165 short courses in all things fashion, from business to design, image-making, technology, costume and science. LCF is also home to specialist centres of practice such as the Centre for Sustainable Fashion, Centre for Fashion Curation and the Fashion Innovation Agency.

LCF places a strong emphasis on social purpose, which means they believe in the value of creative education to make the world a better place.

For this residency, LCF would particularly love to hear from makers, designers or multidisciplinary artists with an interest in social and environmental justice.

LCF want to hear from

Artists or creative practitioners from any discipline with a socially engaged practice – this includes but isn’t limited to designer-makers, textile artists and illustrators as well as digital artists, film makers and mixed or multimedia artists.

No prior experience of working in a HEI setting or collaborating with a researcher is required, but applicants should have some experience of co-creation or community engagement. They should have an interest in collaborative ways of working, furthering their socially engaged practice, engaging with LCF cross-disciplinary teams and working accessibly and inclusively.

You will be hosted by

The Portal Centre for Social Impact, whose work builds on the heritage of LCF’s commitment to fashion, creativity, and design-led education as catalysts for positive social change. Its purpose is to connect with diverse communities through creative practice, to cultivate inclusive, collaborative, innovative spaces and programmes and to create opportunities for people who face barriers to education, employment and enable them to explore and fulfil their creative potential.

Themes

Across the East Bank SEEDED Residency Programme, the primary theme for all partners is social and community engagement, but LCF would particularly like to hear from artists with an interest in:

  • Accessibility and Inclusion in the Arts – designing for and with neurodiverse or disabled communities, viewing creativity through a neurodivergent lens.

  • Social Justice & Sustainable Communities - supporting communities through active healing, not just maintaining.

  • Identity, Belonging & the Politics of Culture – exploring aesthetic traditions, generational creativity and how dress and style portray allegiance, resistance, or exclusion.

  • Decolonising Fashion & Design Systems – cultural heritage and equity in design.

Criteria check

  • Applicants should be within the first five years of their creative practice

  • Applicants do not need to have worked with an HEI setting or with academic researchers to apply
