Improving indoor environments through intelligent ventilation
Airifi is redefining how buildings manage air quality, using intelligent technology to create healthier, quieter and more resilient indoor environments.
Supported through the Future Industries Demonstrator (FID) programme at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Airifi has tested how data-driven ventilation systems can improve everyday environments - from schools to workplaces - while addressing critical challenges such as air pollution, noise and damp.
The challenge
People spend up to 80% of their time indoors, often in spaces where air can be up to 10 times more polluted than outside.
Poor ventilation contributes to:
- Increased exposure to harmful pollutants
- Higher risk of mould and damp
- Negative impacts on health, wellbeing and productivity
- Excessive noise pollution when relying on manual window use
For housing providers, estate managers and businesses, maintaining healthy indoor environments is a growing priority but traditional solutions can be inefficient and difficult to scale.
The solution
Airifi has developed SmartWindows, an intelligent, retrofittable window control system designed to optimise indoor environments in real time.
Using granular environmental data, the system:
- Automatically controls ventilation levels
- Balances air quality with external conditions such as noise and pollution
- Reduces the risk of mould and damp
- Enhances occupant comfort, health and wellbeing

Through FID, Airifi tested its technology in live environments across the Park, including:
- Local schools
- Small office spaces
The Park's diverse built environment and community setting provided the perfect testbed for practical innovation.
