Black British Music: Outside the London Frame

28/05/2026 7-8.30pm

Discover how Black music has been made, shared and sustained across the UK at this panel discussion at V&A East Museum, presented in collaboration with UCL East for The Music is Black Festival from East Bank at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

Sounds beyond London

While London has often been positioned as the centre of Black British music culture, vital scenes have emerged across cities and communities throughout the UK, each shaped by local histories, diasporas and creative networks. This conversation brings together artists, researchers and cultural practitioners to reflect on how Black music has been made, shared and sustained beyond the capital.

With panellists including iconic performer Beverley Knight MBE as well as Mancunian singer Mali Hayes and arts and culture correspondent at The Guardian, Lanre Bakare. The event will be chaired by UCL Associate Professor in Film, Culture and Society, Dr Clive Chijioke Nwonka.
