The 25 successful projects offer wide ranging community services including Bikeworks' Ride Side by Side project which had re-deployed their grant money from the 2019 bidding round for its Covid-19 response, delivering food, and medical supplies and tests to vulnerable isolated people. Funding from the 2020 round will enable them to run their original project giving older residents lifts on electric bicycles.

Other successful projects include the Carpenters Estate Community Archive which will establish a community archive for the Carpenters Estate and Newham neighbourhood, as well as the Our Park Life Community Conservation Project which will explore the different ways local communities can be brought together through gardening and growing on the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

We are pleased that our funding has been able to make a difference to local communities during the pandemic by providing vital support to those most vulnerable in our communities.”

In the last round, 14 local community projects received more than £885,000 from the Fund.

The Neighbourhood Priorities Fund was set up to administer the Neighbourhood Portion of the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL). Government guidance sets out that in an area with no parish councils, a Local Planning Authority that charges CIL should allocate 15% of annual CIL receipts to be spent on projects in consultation with local communities. 

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allows LLDC to raise funds from a charge on new floorspace that is built in our area. CIL contributions can be spent on infrastructure that will help support growth in the area. The LLDC CIL Charging Schedule originally came into effect in April 2015 with an updated charging schedule coming into place in 2020 . This means LLDC can support infrastructure projects that improve our area for current residents and businesses as well as those moving to the area and making Stratford their home.

Social Ark is an East London charity that works with 18–30-year-olds from disadvantaged backgrounds across the Olympic boroughs. All experience poverty, and a combination of the following: lack of education, disability, homelessness, addiction or/and the criminal justice system. Through structured learning, influential expert mentoring, and wrap-around support, they access everything needed to enable them to use their own lived experiences and develop social businesses. Empowering them with the skills and confidence needed to develop and lead social businesses directly improves their own under-resourced communities. We have witnessed a shift in attitude and a ripple effect in the local area, more young people are inspired by social entrepreneurship and recognising it as an alternative and viable route to employment.

Over 12 months, this project will work with up to 10 disadvantaged young people who will successfully develop their own social businesses. They will learn the nuts and bolts of starting their own business, taking part in the full programme.

Stour Trust CIC

Stour Trust CIC is Fish Island where redevelopment will complete 2021/2022. The community asset will offer key services to the wider Hackney Wick and Fish Island community and partner with East Bank institutions such as UCL and UAL. In order build a truly inclusive community asset that is accessible and representative of the diversity, cultures and backgrounds represented within the local area, this pilot project will develop the skills and leadership attributes of local artists, creative business owners, residents and social enterprise businesses from under-represented backgrounds; particularly black, Asian, traveller and minority individuals.

The Abbey Wood

Ambition, Aspire, Achieve (AAA) is a children and young people specific charity focused on intervening early to support disadvantaged, disabled, vulnerable and at risk children and young people to overcome their problems, difficulties and challenges and having done so, to follow positive pathways forward to achieving their full potential personally, socially and educationally.

AAA has been gifted for an initial 10 year period an area of mature woodland approx 800m x 100m adjacent to Abbey Hub by Thames Water, the landowners. The area is being developed as a community and learning resource about wildlife and its conservation within inner city Newham and as a medium to support improved wellbeing. An outdoor learning area, a hide, a variety of animal, bird and bug houses (including a number with unobstructive cameras), a nature trail, a bushcraft area (shelter building, fire pit and oven, orienteering course, foraging walk, a bulb planting programme and a woodcraft skills workshop space) will be installed in the woodland.

Grow Hackney

Grow, Hackney is a grassroots cultural space and experiment in ethical and sustainable business. Since 2014, as well as hosting live music and art events it has hosted community meetups & workshops for the benefit of the local people in the LLDC area including residents, artists, makers and musicians.

In response to lockdown, in August 2020, it launched a series of 12 virtual gatherings called 'Grow at Home' supported by the Arts Council England. These online events illustrated the value of

history of connecting with the community during challenging times and how much people were missing the activity and discussion which was previously happening in situ at Grow. Creating an outdoor space where we can still safely bring people together and help maintain the area as a creative hub will provide a valuable and ongoing community resource. The yard’s potential was shown by the success of V&A Lates at Grow in October 2019 (which included performances and open studios) and several successful artist/makers markets have been hosted since 2018.
