Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park recognised as one of the UK's very best green spaces

Press Release 22/07/2019

Today, a record number of parks and green spaces collect a Green Flag Award

Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford has been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as one of the very best in the world.

The Park is among a record-breaking 1,970 UK parks and green spaces and 131 in thirteen other countries around the world, that will today (Tuesday 16 July 2019) receive a prestigious Green Flag Award – the mark of a quality park or green space.

This international award, now into its third decade, is a sign to the public that the space boasts the highest possible environmental standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent visitor facilities.

Spread across 560 acres of stunning parklands, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park is free to enter and home to beautifully landscaped gardens, historic waterways, famous sporting venues such as the London Stadium and London Aquatics Centre, a vibrant arts and events programme and the ArcelorMittal Orbit visitor attraction. Those who make the 10-minute journey from central London will find themselves surrounded by nature without having to leave the city. There are secluded gardens, beautiful landscaping and memories of London 2012 to discover on the Park’s free walking trails and unique adventure play areas with rock pools, sand pits, slides and swings just waiting to be enjoyed. And don’t miss the hugely popular interactive fountains next to the Pleasure Gardens - 195 jets of water putting on a show and the perfect place to cool down if it gets warm.

Mark Camley, Executive Director of Park Operations and Venues at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, said: “We are absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award for the sixth year in a row. Our fantastic team of gardeners, designers and volunteers work throughout the year to maintain the beautiful surroundings that are enjoyed by both local people and visitors and I am thrilled that their dedication is being recognised through this prestigious award. Over 29.5 million people have already enjoyed the ever-evolving parklands and we hope to welcome millions more over the next year.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”
