Improving indoor environments through intelligent ventilation

Airifi is redefining how buildings manage air quality, using intelligent technology to create healthier, quieter and more resilient indoor environments.

Supported through the Future Industries Demonstrator (FID) programme at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Airifi has tested how data-driven ventilation systems can improve everyday environments - from schools to workplaces - while addressing critical challenges such as air pollution, noise and damp.

The challenge

Damp, mould and poor indoor air quality are significant challenges across the UK's housing stock, particularly in urban areas where homes can be exposed to high levels of pollution and limited natural ventilation.

Housing providers face several challenges when addressing these issues:

  • Poor ventilation contributing to damp and mould growth
  • High levels of indoor pollutants and carbon dioxide
  • Resident health and wellbeing concerns
  • Limited real-world performance data on new solutions
  • Rising costs associated with investigating and responding to complaints

For housing associations and local authorities, identifying effective, scalable solutions is a growing priority.

The solution

Airifi has developed SmartWindow, an intelligent window ventilation system designed to improve indoor air quality without requiring major building alterations.

The solution enables:

  • Reduction of indoor pollutants and carbon dioxide levels
  • Better management of humidity and condensation
  • Continuous monitoring of indoor environmental conditions

Testing at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park

Through FID, Airifi installed SmartWindow devices in residential properties to understand how the technology performs in real-world settings and to gather evidence on its impact.

Trial approach

  • Installation of SmartWindow units in occupied residential homes
  • Collection of baseline environmental data
  • Monitoring of air quality, humidity and temperature conditions
  • Collaboration with Poplar HARCA to evaluate performance in social housing
  • Resident education and engagement to support understanding of indoor air quality

Results and impact

While data collection is ongoing, early results are encouraging.

The trial demonstrated:

  • Successful installation within occupied social housing properties
  • Effective deployment across different window types, including sash windows
  • Improvements in indoor environmental quality through lower carbon dioxide levels and more stable temperatures
  • Strong interest from housing providers in exploring wider deployment

One of the most significant outcomes has been the partnership developed with Poplar HARCA, which has agreed to continue testing the technology beyond the FID programme through an extended six-month trial and discussions around future projects.
