Volunteer as a Park Champion

Park Champions play a key role in supporting a range of Park events. 

Everything from a large international sporting event to smaller local community activities, there’s plenty to get involved in! Roles will involve providing excellent customer care to visitors by offering support, enthusiasm, directions and local knowledge; essentially providing “eyes and ears” and a warm welcome, ensuring that the events and activities run smoothly. 

Roles will be specific to each event but are likely to include: 

Park Champion Event Support – You will receive training and the opportunity to participate in a number of prestigious Park events.

Park Champion Event Team Leader – You will be responsible for managing a team of up to 15 volunteers and receive training and support for your role including: Becoming a Team Leader, Understanding Emotional Intelligence, First Aid.

Park Champions in this role are often the first to help and support visitors to the Park. They answer questions, help visitors plan their visit, offer information on the Park and what’s on as well as delivering the Park Mobility Service. This important service helps support visitors to the Park with mobility and/or visual impairments.

Services provided include an accessible ‘golf’ buggy, sighted guides and hire of mobility equipment - in a similar fashion to existing Shop and Park mobility schemes operating around the country.

The Park Champion conservation programme invites people to use, explore, enjoy and learn more about this amazing space. You will be able to take part in group conservation tasks as well as get involved in a more tailored programme if you’re able to volunteer on a regular basis. Under the supervision of Park gardeners you will have the opportunity to learn new gardening and horticultural skills and hear about the exciting plans for the Park in 2015 and beyond.

Group volunteering activities might include: woodland maintenance, tree and wildlife surveys and tending of the designed gardens.

Group volunteering occurs twice a month in the spring, summer and autumn and once a month in the winter. They are generally held on the first Wednesday and third Saturday, but this can change depending on other Park wide activity. All changes are communicated well in advance. 

Our Garden volunteers are recruited twice a year. The next interview round will be held in the spring.

We are now recruiting for new volunteer opportunities working with GLL at the Copper Box Arena and London Aquatics Centre to promote sport and physical activity sessions at the venues. There is an exciting opportunity to become a Community Guide volunteer on Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park.

This comes as a natural development of our incredibly successful Park Mobility Service and Customer services provided to visitors from the Information Point and will allow Park Champions to share their passion, enthusiasm and knowledge of the Park with visitors.

Education Visit Support Volunteer 

We are looking for people who are really passionate about the Park. Whether an existing volunteer or a local resident, we are looking for enthusiastic volunteers with a professional attitude to assist schools during their visits to the Park.

Some previous experience on the Park, as a team leader or in a community guide role would be advantageous but not essential – as long as you’re friendly and enjoy sharing your passion for the Park, we would love to hear from you.

Roles can include:

• Delivering the Energy & Sustainability education visit (for community guides only)
• Delivering a tour of the Park (for community guides only)
• Chaperoning students from their school to the Park and return
• Assisting Our Parklife’s staff with the delivery of an education visit
