SCHOOLCHILDREN PLANT A TREE FOR THE JUBILEE AT QUEEN ELIZABETH OLYMPIC PARK

Press Release 31/05/2022

Double celebration to mark 10 Year Anniversary since the London 2012 Games and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.

Schoolchildren from Mossbourne Riverside Academy joined local Hackney Councillors at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to mark 10 years since the London 2012 Games and celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee ‘Plant a tree for the Queen’s Jubilee’ taking place this year.

Born in 2012 and now 10 years old, the schoolchildren from Mossbourne Riverside Academy, joined local Councillors Chris Kennedy and Jessica Webb to celebrate these this double milestone in this anniversary year.

The Park is participating in the Queen’s Green Canopy is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 which invites people from across the United Kingdom to “Plant a Tree for the Jubilee”.  With a focus on planting sustainably, the QGC will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations. The children planted a Liquidambar styraciflua - Hillier in the north of the Park, near the Agitos sculpture.

Lyn Garner, Chief Executive at the London Legacy Development Corporation, said: “It’s fantastic to be celebrating our 10 year anniversary since the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympics Games and the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee in the same year at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park. It is so lovely to have local schoolchildren born in 2012 planting a tree with local councillors on the Park to mark both these very special milestones today. We want people to come and enjoy all the Park has to offer so look out for our 10 year anniversary celebrations including The Great Get Together and Celebrating 10 Years – Festival Site this summer.”

Tarah, aged 10, from Mossbourne Riverside Academy, said: “It’s really fun to be planting this tree today in my favourite Park for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. I really enjoy coming to the Park with my friends and family and it is so exciting that it’s 10 years since the Games.”

Emily, aged 10, from Mossbourne Riverside Academy, said: “We were really excited to plant the tree today at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park – I love the Park because it’s a very exciting and cool place. Views are incredible and it’s the perfect place for a picnic.”
