We were thrilled to see so many familiar names on the recently released New Year’s honours list, which includes numerous sporting icons and their achievements. You may recognise some of the names from the London 2012 Olympic Games, as they made their mark on the Park during that unforgettable fortnight.

Two of the Super Saturday athletes who rocked the Stadium were amongst the list, with Mo Farah and Jessica Ennis-Hill to be granted with a CBE, a knighthood and damehood respectively, for their services to running and athletics. 

Meanwhile, several cyclists who stormed to victory at the Velodrome during the 2012 Games, and even more recently at last month’s Revolution Champions league grand final, have been recognised for their contributions to cycling. Jason and Laura Kenny will be awarded with an OBE and fellow cyclists Ed Clancy and Elinor Barker will receive an MBE.

Team GB’s hockey players, Helen and Kate Richardson-Walsh both made an appearance on the list, after being part of the awe-inspiring efforts to better London’s bronze medal in Rio 2016 where Team GB women’s hockey took a historic gold medal.  Inspired by them? Try your hand at hockey at the rush hockey sessions at Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre.

The reigning Paralympic Champion for Men’s singles in wheelchair tennis, and more recently a finalist in the NEC Wheelchair Tennis Masters men’s singles final, Gordon Reid is listed to receive an MBE, as are popular divers Chris Mears and Jack Laugher and gymnast Max Whitlock. Other big names from the fantastic world of sport that made the New Year’s honours list include Andy Murray, Lee Pearson, Nick Skelton and Nicola Adams.
